Natriuretic peptides are commonly found in small amounts within the heart. Abnormally high levels may indicate a heart complication.

Who: Individuals over the age of 18 who need to assess the health of their heart, progression of heart disease, or efficacy of treatment for heart disease

What: Blood specimen

Why: A BNP test may determine whether or not an individual is experiencing heart failure, this can help diagnoses or rule out illnesses of the heart. 

If heart failure has been diagnosed, this test may help inform:

  • The severity of the condition
  • Treatment planning 
  • The efficacy of the treatment
